As our kids grow up, we as parents love to play the game of “she/he got this from me and that from her/his father.” It’s almost like a badge we award ourself for passing on admirable traits to the next generation. The flipside of this game is admitting when we passed on our less-than-desirable traits to our kids and trying to place the blame for those characteristics on the other side of the babymaking equation (i.e. the person you spent that one special night with).
Sadly, my girls ended up with my inability to carry a tune. Like most people who can’t carry a tune, we love to sing and don’t let those minor details of pitch and tempo stop us from belting out a song or two in the privacy of our own homes or local karaoke bar.
Abbi has loved to sing since she first began talking. And she has the wonderful ability to hear a song one or two times and very easily catch on to the words…which also keeps me on my toes as to what we can and cannot listen to in the car together! One of her favorite artists right now is Taylor Swift. Say what you may about Taylor Swift but I’d much rather listen to her than Veggie Tales over and over and over again! Anyhow, Abbi knows quite a few of Taylor’s songs and can even recognize one of her songs after just a few notes have been played on the radio.
Here is a video of Abbi singing “You Belong With Me” without any music.
It couldn’t have been more perfect! This morning we woke up from our turkey comas to see snow on the ground! Ok, to be honest, there was hardly any snow and it all melted before noon, but it was snow and Abbi was super excited. It was the perfect way to kick off the Christmas Season!!!
I love Christmas. I love seeing our Christmas tree all lit-up at night (we have yet to put it up though). I love wrapping presents with big beautiful bows. I love making cookies and candies with my girls. I love hearing Christmas music playing through the stores. I love driving around, looking at all of the lights and decorations on people’s houses. I love it!
Most of all, I love seeing the excitement and wonder of Christmas in the eyes of my girls. Watching Abbi get so excited about the snow this morning put a renewed love for the holidays in me. I’m ready!
And to start off the holidays, here is a little Christmas cheer:
Forty years. FORTY YEARS! This week Sesame Street is celebrating forty years of singing, dancing, laughing and teaching.
We love Sesame Street in our house! It is one of those very rare shows that shows that bridges the generational gap between myself and my kids. It is one of those rare children’s programs that I can sit and watch with my kids without being driven crazy!
I actually love watching Sesame Street with my girls. I love catching some of the old skits and songs from when I was a kid. I love seeing actors and musicians make their way onto that famous street. I couldn’t help but laugh when Sandra Oh (hardcore Dr. Cristina Yang from “Grey’s Anatomy”) trades in her scrubs for wings as Cookie Monster’s fairy cookie person!

Mostly though, I love watching my girls learn while watching those loveable characters and monsters. From numbers & letters to increasing their vocabulary and learning spanish! I’m pretty sure that I actually learned to count in spanish from Sesame Street when I was their age!
Sesame Workshop and Vivendi Entertainment has come up with an amazing way to celebrate those past 40 years of education and entertainment on the most famous street in the world with Sesame Street: Forty Years of Sunny Days! This double dvd set, complete with a hard bound informational book, highlights some of the most memorable moments from each of those 40 seasons.
The dvds, packed with over 5 hours of muppet fun and never-before-seen backstage footage and interviews, are a great way to relive some of your favorite Sesame Street moments and to even discover some new ones! I was amazed at how much my girls loved watching the episodes from the early years. Although, Abbi was a little confused as to why Oscar wasn’t green!

I have a whole new appreciation for Sesame Street — the writers, actors, puppeteers, and voice talents — after watching Forty Years of Sunny Days and reading through the Limited Edition Commemorative Book. For example, did you know that Carol Spinney has been the man behind Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the beginning? He is one of only three original cast members still on the show!
Although Sesame Street has undergone a few changes these past 40 years (new actors, new muppets, new topics), it still holds true to the principles it was rounded on in 1969 — educating and entertaining children!
Congratulations on 40 Years Sesame Street and here’s to 40 more!!!
Forty Years of Sunny Days, priced at $29.93, is available at SesameStreet.org and other retailers.
*Disclaimer: I did receive a complimentary copy of Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days for this review.
When I first saw this clip from The Family Guy, I laughed. Hard. Then I wanted to cry because it could not have captured my life more perfectly. Zoe is Stewie and we go through this scene multiple times a day. Just change the location — the living room, the dining room table, the car, the store, the bathtub, her bedroom, the sandbox. Over and over and over again.
I’m sure I’m not alone! So enjoy all you parents of toddlers!
